CRASH COURSE ON
THE 201st Squadron

The Aztec Eagles were a fighter pilot squadron from Mexico who joined the United States in fighting the Axis Powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Mexico, who was originally neutral in the war, accepted an invitation by the U.S. in 1945 to fight with them after a Mexican oil tanker was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Mexico Fighting alongside the U.S. was made possible because of the Joint Mexican-United States Defense Commission and the Lend-Lease Agreement.

THE AZTEC EAGLES?

The squadron consisted of more than 300 Mexican Volunteers. All volunteers were a part of The Mexican Expeditionary Air Force because of their more expanded knowledge of the English language and previous flight training. 30 were experienced pilots and the rest were groundcrew. The ground crewmen were electricians, mechanics, and radiomen.
